The dream
The story of the Association begins with a heroine, Dawn Elenbaas – a missionary who has been supporting the cause of abandoned children in Romania for more than 20 years. Having worked for a long time with children in placement centers under the Child Protection Directorate, Dawn saw the need for an early intervention day center for young children, aged between 0 and 6.
Thus, in 2019, together with Alina Birgean (educator and adoptive mother of a child with special needs), Cristian Bulica (financial consultant) and Marius Badescu (coordinating social worker), they laid the foundations of the “Micile Comori” Association, the legal framework necessary for her dream to become a reality.
Subsequently, a suitable location was found, which was renovated and adapted to the specific requirements of a specialized day center for children with disabilities. The Association also receives the Accreditation Certificate as a social services provider, and the first project of the Association comes into being.
In the fall of 2022, we signaled the need for a larger space, and the request to increase the capacity, namely 35 monthly beneficiaries, was approved by AJPIS Bucharest. We therefore set out in search of a space suitable for the needs of the children, more rooms, compartmentalization at ground level (ground floor), outdoor space for a playground. The requirements were many, our dreams were big, but with God’s help we managed to find the space, and we started 2023 in a new house.
Part of the day center’s services are reimbursed by Social Assistance Directorate Timiș, but beneficiaries must meet at least two aspects (the domicile of one of the parents must be in Timișoara and/or a certificate of disability classification of the applicant).
Out of the desire to help as many children as possible, we also accept extra subsidized cases, for a fee, supported by donors, or fully supported by us as an Association.
